St Piran's Day
We had a belated celebration of St Piran's Day as we had invited Lucy Taylor (owner of Sarah's Pasties in Looe) in to teach us how to made a Cornish pasty. In the morning the children looked at the Patron Saint of Cornwall through their RE learning, listening to the Fisherman's Friends version of Cornwall my Home and in the afternoon they had a cookery workshop with Lucy.
Lockdown Procedure Practice
The school had their first experience of a lockdown practice this week. We started by talking it through as a school to understand why it is important to practice for events like this and the children asked sensible questions to check their understanding. During and after the drill, the children were calm, sensible and raised good points for when we do this drill again.
EYFS/KS1 Pop up play experience
We teamed up with Polperro Primary to take part in a pop up play experience. The children had access to a range of activities to develop their oracy skills, communication and language and imagination through role play opportunities.
Trekking at Great Trethew
Some of our children had the opportunity to have a taster session at Great Trethew. The children were in charge of brushing the horses, feeding them and filling up their water and finally were able to ride and lead them. For some of our children, this was their first experience riding their horse and I was incredibly proud to see them have trust in their partner and horse and be brave to try this new experience. Thank-you to the Great Trethew team for a very memorable opportunity!
Fairtrade Fortnight
We had teamed up with the church to host a community tearoom event to support Fairtrade Fortnight. The children have learnt about the importance of Fairtrade through collective worship this week and our school council prepared a presentation for the tearoom event including a Kahoot quiz to test the knowledge of the children and parents.
Dates for the diary
Tuesday 14th March-Our belated St Piran's Day where we will be making pasties. Please remember to wear black and white on this day.
Friday 17th March-Red Nose Day-Children to wear red on this day with a donation to support this amazing cause.
This week we have started our swimming at Tencreek. The children were brilliant and confident in the water. We look forward to seeing them progress over the next 5 weeks.
On Thursday, the whole school went to Plymouth to visit the synagogue linking to our Judaism RE unit. The children learnt about the routines and items within the synagogue and the different roles. I was extremely proud of how much subject knowledge the children demonstrated of both Christianity and Judaism.
We then visited The Box to explore the museum and was amazed when we saw the Woolly Mammoth.
Next week we have a busy week with Sean Hewitt coming to do two art afternoons to develop our library area, world book day and our active day on Friday with outdoor learning and cricket.
Today is Safer Internet Day and we have looked at ways to keep ourselves safe whilst online. All children have demonstrated a good understanding of the strategies and we have focused on what to do when we are unsure online.
The theme this year is: Want to talk about it?
I have emailed all parents with a 'top tips' guide alongside the image in this blog for tips about encouraging open discussion about digital lives. Please continue to talk with your child about their digital life so they use the power of the Internet in effective and positive ways.
Happy New Year and welcome back!
We have had a brilliant week by going to watch Sleeping Beauty at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. The whole school went to watch the pantomime to support their English learning where they will be looking at traditional tales. The children and adults had a fantastic time including enjoying their interval ice-cream! A huge thank-you to our PTFA who funded half of the trip.
We have also introduced to the children Class Dojo where we will be awarding points to children who demonstrate our Christian values. Our aim for this term is to be instilling those values in our day-to-day lives and we will be going into depth with this further during our Christian Value Day next Wednesday.
We have sent out dates for the diary for this half term so please keep an eye on upcoming events.
Santa's trees in Liskeard have been very kind and donated us a Christmas tree to have at our school. We took the school minibus and with a selection of children, we walked around in search for a perfect 5ft tree. We were making some maths links by estimating sizes of Christmas trees and how long it takes for a Christmas tree to grow (the fact we learnt: it takes 10 years for a Christmas tree to be 5ft). We then brought the tree back and a different group of children decorated.
Bridge Schools Performing Arts Competition
We have had a wonderfully creative week, with 16 children representing our school in the Bridge Schools Performing Arts competition at Carnglaze Cavern. We participated with 7 of the Trust schools and we came FIRST!!! After weeks of performing arts club with Miss Cunliffe, all their hard work paid off and it was amazing to see them blossom with confidence.
My favourite comment from the judges was"It was the most diverse group out of all 14 schools ranging from age 4 to 11 and you get a real sense of care for one another". We pride ourselves for being a caring school family, so I was really pleased to see that this is evident to people outside of our school.
